Ashtabula, Ohio

Historic Harbor Area

The Historic Harbor district is located in the northern part of the city. Most of the buildings are from the 1850s and 60s. The main street running through the Harbor is Bridge Street, named for the Strauss bascule bridge that runs over the Ashtabula River. This is one of only two such lift bridges remaining in Ohio.

While I was growing up the Harbor was a fun place to celebrate festivals and find unique gifts. It was also a HUGE pain when you got stuck waiting for the bridge to go up and down on the hour.

The Harbor is more than just shopping though. The Hubbard House Underground Museum is one of the few surviving stops from the historic Underground Railround. Refugee slaves could stay safely while waiting for an available boat to Canada. There is also the Ashtabula Maritime and Surface Transportation Museum
